Upcoming Programs:

The Palisades Branch of the Los Angeles Library Presents A Free Summer Music Series

The first band to play in the free summer concert series is FEEDUS, a reggae based rock group that is a fixture in many local venues. The concert will take place Saturday June 23rd at 3:00 p.m. on the patio adjacent to the Library’s community room.

Our first evening concert takes place on Wednesday July 22nd at 7:00 p.m. on the patio. Our featured performers are Jacaranda. They’ll make ya wanna move. They’ll make ya wanna groove. They’ll make ya wanna get funky. Jacaranda is “All Sides of Rock,” the ménage a tois of rock, funk and all that lies between. Jacaranda has been entertaining the masses throughout Los Angeles and Orange County for nearly six years, dishing out their particular fusion of music, humor and socio-political commentary. The band has been featured in Atomic Basement’s independent comic books Mac Afro and Gone South (for which it wrote the theme songs), as well as the LA Greens compilation CD, a disc put together to raise funds for the Green Party in 2003.

More concerts in our series will soon be annouced.

Saturday, June 30, 2007, at 2:00 p.m., Anne Taylor Fleming will discuss her most recent book, As If Love Were Enough, and Karl Fleming will discuss his memoir, Son of the Rough South.

Thursday July 27, 2007 - The American Association of University Woman Film discussion group meets in the community room at 1 p.m.  The films under discussion are Paris Je T’aime and Georgia Rule. The public is welcome to participate

Ongoing Programs:

Movies are shown at the Library on the third Friday of each month, at 2:00 p.m.  The next scheduled movies are:

Friday, July 7 - Calamity Jane with Doris Day and Howard Keel

Friday, August 17 - Rio Bravo with John Wayne, Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson, and Angie Dickinson, directed by Howard Hawks

Friday, September 21 - The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes with Graham Armitage, Michael Balfour, directed by Billy Wilder

Light refreshments will be provided.  Please bring a sweater or jacket as the room can be cool!

2006 Program Highlights:

In May best-selling author Thomas Perry gave a humorous account of his writing career and signed his latest thriller, Nightlife.

In June Dr. Richard McBride, Director of the Family History Center in Los Angeles, gave a very helpful talk on the basics of family history research and genealogy.

We held a program in July on the patio outside the library’s community room. People danced along to the very lively Louisiana music performed by Bonne Musique Zydeco.

Two programs were held in September. The first was Seth Faison, who spent five years in Shanghai as the Bureau Chief for the New York Times. He discussed his first book, South of the Clouds. Arianna Huffington also spoke about her new book, On Becoming Fearless… in Love, Work, and Life.

In October there were two more programs. Carolyn See was very funny and entertaining in discussing her writing career and her most recent book, There Will Never Be Another You: A Novel. Ray Bradbury then gave a very charming talk about his path from 1943, when he first became a full-time writer, to the present. He also briefly discussed his latest book which was published in October, 2006, Farewell Summer.

In December, Maggie Kilgore, a journalist, teacher, and author, discussed her book: Remember to Laugh: Writing My Way Around the World. This was a fascinating look at the experiences of a journalist whose work took her around the world over many years and through many historical events, such as the Vietnam War.
